“The more you feed me, the more I feed you.” — Feedback Loop

What is a Feedback Loop?

A feedback loop is a system structure in which outputs of a process are circled back and used as inputs. It occurs in nature when the product of a reaction leads to an increase in that reaction.

Types

  • Positive Feedback Loop: Amplifies changes; the system moves further away from equilibrium.

Example: The melting of polar ice reduces the Earth’s albedo, causing more heat absorption and further melting.

  • Negative Feedback Loop: Reduces changes; the system tends to stabilize.

Example: Homeostasis in the human body, such as temperature regulation—when you get hot, you sweat to cool down.
